Week 28: February 28 - March 4

 Wow!  Superhero Essay was a great unit and lots of students met the deadline challenge, getting a donut reward. The unit will conclude with student conferences Tuesday. While I meet with students, Mrs. Schmutz - the sub who is also a very experienced History Day parent - will give helps and tips.

This is a HUGE week for History Day preparation. Monday, and Wednesday - Friday, students will present their finished projects to the class as their "Second Inspections." The Second Inspection includes the project and the process paper with its annotated bibliography.

Tri 3 Begins - February 22-26, 2016

Trimester 3 is the one where our honors students are pulling everything together.

This week we'll introduce, create, and complete the Battle of  the Super Heroes Argumentative essay.
In addition, the first i-read for this trimester will be due Friday.
We will NOT be working on history fair projects in class this week, however, students WILL be presenting them next week  (February 29-March 4) and all projects must be turned in before spring break.

Week  26: This is the last week of Trimester 2. Please note that all first inspections will be done before or after school. That means – Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. THESE WILL BE ON TRI-2 GRADES!!!

We’re doing inspections out-of-class so students can learn how to write an Argumentative essay using the OREO formula. This will be lots of fun as we’re using “The Battle of the Superheroes” as our lens. So, get ready to “fight” for your superhero with FACTS.

This will be a great week. Students will be able to work on their history fair projects, preparing for their 1st inspections.

The following is a copy of 1st inspection requirements - which are also found in the student workbook:

***Following the rules in the NHD Contest Guide, turn your outline into your project.

***All projects will be undergo 2 inspections.

***The process paper must be included in these inspections. (Refer to PP Guide)

*The 1st inspection

= teacher inspection = to ensure the material chosen effectively demonstrates how the topic meets the theme and to correct any errors in information or presentation.

       *Topic meets theme

      *Specific evidence being used; this includes pictures, quotes, basic information & other things

      *Typed Process Paper: including Annotated Bibliography

              *Exhibits: sketch of how you will present this information, including colors  /artifacts you will use to enhance the visual

              presentation

              *Documentaries: (storyboard) sequence of information being presented,  including music, interviews and video clips.

              *Performances: script, including roles, description of costumes, and props that will be used.

*Historical Papers: A first typed draft of the paper, including parenthetical

documentation, annotated bibliography, and appendix (if used) (please refer to the MLA guideline booklet)

*Web Site: (storyboard) sketch of each page, including pictures, information,

Exhibits, Documentaries, and Performances will finish-out next week and may flow over into the following week as well. Also note when after-school help is available.

WEEK 23 - January 25-29, 2016

Students will complete their ACES/Explanatory essays Monday and the rest of the week they'll learn/practice prefixes and spend the rest of the time working on their history fair projects. It should be a fun and productive week - IF students submit their outlines so they can start organizing their projects.  2 I-Reads are due this week: #8 Monday (moved from last Friday) and #9 Friday.

Please note: I am very willing to work with students outside of class to help them with their history fair projects - they just need to make an appointment.

Weeks 21-22: January 11-22, 2016

Week 21: January 11-15

This week students learned and practiced how to successfully add effective introductory and concluding paragraphs to ACES paragraphs. Because students have already mastered how to write an ACES paragraph, incorporating them into a full explanatory essay was a natural step.
Also, students continued to read and submit their i-Read equivalencies - number 7 was due Friday, January 15.
Finally, students submitted preliminary information so I can start their WC History Day registration. They will complete it next week. Besides the registration, students were to submit their history day project's outlines this week. Many of these are still missing. Please get these in ASAP.

Week 22: January 19-22

No school will be held on Monday, January 18th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. so, we will begin the week on Tuesday, January 19.
Students will begin the week showing their mastery of the Explanatory essay, writing one on their own based on 2 SCOPE Magazine articles. Tuesday, students will read the articles and write their rough draft, using the foldable tool they learned during the previous week. Then Wednesday and Thursday, students will type their essay into a Google Doc and share it with me via e-mail. They will be graded on the quality of their introduction, conclusion, and use of transitions.
And finally, those students who just have a little to left to finish on the SAGE interim will called in during FLEX time throughout the week. Those who had not started the second of the two tests, will not be asked to complete it.

After Janaury 22: Coming up next:
After we complete the Explanatory essays, we will spend all our time on the history fair projects; deepening research, enriching it with pictures, video clips, music, and other types of sources to make the final projects shine.
In addition, we will concentrate on Greek and Latin roots and affixes, and of course, continue our i-Reads.
