Week 28: February 28 - March 4

Wow! Superhero Essay was a great unit and lots of students met the deadline challenge, getting a donut reward. The unit will conclude with student conferences Tuesday. While I meet with students, Mrs. Schmutz - the sub who is also a very experienced History Day parent - will give helps and tips.

This is a HUGE week for History Day preparation. Monday, and Wednesday - Friday, students will present their finished projects to the class as their "Second Inspections." The Second Inspection includes the project and the process paper with its annotated bibliography.

March 19th WCSD History Day Competition

WOW! The students were great! Their work, presentation, behavior, and appearance was the best. Judges commented that they wished they could award every one of our students a prize. LRI got a large percentage of regional champions who will go on to the state's April 16th competition and we were also awarded a lot of special prizes, aw well.

NOTE: The SAGE tests will occur during this same time; however we have not yet received the exact dates. But, when we do, we will have to adjust our calendar accordingly.

TUESDAY'S AFTER-SCHOOL HELP

To help students I will be holding an after-school "reading and homework club" from 2-3 PM each Tuesday. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that your student attend if he/she has an NP or needs to complete any assignment, including any i-Reads.

Students may bring non-messy snacks to munch on while they work.

The purpose of this time is to help your student get and stay caught-up in class. They will have access to a phone at 3, so you can provide a ride for them.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Together, I know we can help your student succeed.

What We'll be doing this year:

This 7th grade Honors Language Arts class is an exciting and advanced course based on the Utah Standards. These Standards require students to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively. They will "read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they've read (in a variety of written responses, including narrative, argumentative, and explanatory), stressing critical-thinking skills, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life" (http://www.corestandards.org/ELAliteracy).

Our purpose is to enrich your Language Arts experience. This class will have a research, project-based learning focus. Students will have the opportunity to explore many types of reading & writing in depth, including producing a required History Day Project (WCSD History Day will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016 - attendance is required - so please plan early so there isn't a conflict.)
